NGC 4236 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (n) dm in the constellation Dragon in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 6 million light years from the Milky Way . Together with LEDA 2731233 it forms the galaxy pair Holm 357 and is considered a member of the M81 group .
The object was discovered on April 6, 1793 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
