NGC 2419 , also known as the Intergalactic Wanderer , is a globular cluster in the constellation Lynx, 4 'in diameter .
properties
Located 7 ° north and slightly east of the star Castor in the constellation Gemini , NGC 2419 with a brightness of 10.3 mag is significantly weaker than more well-known globular clusters such as Messier 13 , but can be observed from a telescope opening of 10 cm under good sky conditions.
NGC 2419 is approximately 275,000 light years from the solar system and 300,000 light years from the Galactic Center . Despite this great distance, it was only recognized later as belonging to the Milky Way . It takes about 3 billion years to orbit the Milky Way.
In the meantime, with C 0422-213 , AM-1 , Palomar 3 , Palomar 4 and Palomar 14 further globular clusters gravitationally bound to the Milky Way have been found, which are even further away than NGC 2419.
Observation history
NGC 2419 was discovered by William Herschel on December 31, 1788 and described as a round spot. Only Lord Rosse was able to resolve it into single stars with his Leviathan telescope in 1850 and saw it as a possible globular cluster for the first time. This was finally confirmed in 1922 by Carl Otto Lampland with a recording at the Lowell Observatory .
In the same year Harlow Shapley gave a first distance estimate of 160,000 light years, which Walter Baade at the Mount Wilson Observatory increased to 182,000 light years based on the investigation of RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster.
Harlow Shapley nicknamed NGC 2419 the Intergalactic Tramp , which later became Intergalactic Wanderer , due to the large dimensions of the Milky Way, which were not known at the time, and the systematically underestimated distances to other galaxies such as the Andromeda Nebula .
