NGC 891 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It has an angular dimension of 11.7 '× 1.6' and an apparent magnitude of 10.1 mag. The galaxy is around 30 million light years from the Milky Way and belongs to the NGC-1023 group. With a diameter of 150,000 light years, NGC 891 is the dominant galaxy in this group and at the same time one of the largest known spiral galaxies. The object is in interaction with the approximately 250,000 Lj. Of their distant dwarf galaxy UGC 1807 .
In the same area of the sky there are still u. a. the galaxies NGC 898 , NGC 906 , NGC 909 , NGC 911 .

The Type II supernova SN 1986J was observed here.

Due to a mix-up, the discovery of NGC 891 was long ascribed to Caroline Lucretia Herschel , but the galaxy was actually discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on October 6, 1784 . Images of the galaxy using the Hubble Space Telescope show its details.

This galaxy was mentioned by name in an announcement by the on-board computer in John Carpenter's film Dark Star ("When twilight falls on NGC 891").
