NGC 2506 is an open cluster of the type I2r in the constellation Unicorn in the southern sky . It has an angular extent of 12.0 'and an apparent magnitude of 7.6. A study from 2007 gives the distance to the solar system at 11,000 light years and a diameter of 25-35 light years. The age of the metal-poor cluster is estimated to be 2 billion years.
The object was discovered by William Herschel on February 23, 1791 .
