NGC 2517 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation aft deck of the ship in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 58 million light years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years across .
The object was discovered on March 16, 1836 by John Herschel .
