NGC 2536 is a barred spiral galaxy IVOM Hubble type SBc / P in the constellation Cancer on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 181 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years across. Together with NGC 2535 , it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 82 , Holm 94 or KPG 156 .

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a large companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 493 , IC 496 , IC 497 , IC 2230 .

The type IIb supernova SN 2014ds was observed here.

The object was discovered on January 22, 1877 by the French astronomer Édouard Jean-Marie Stephan .
