NGC 2546 is an open star cluster in the constellation Puppis in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 3,000 light years from the solar system and about 75 million years old. The cluster contains a striking number of double stars .
The object was discovered by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille in South Africa in 1751 .
