NGC 2540 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Cancer on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 279 million light years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxies IC 496 and IC 2230 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Édouard Stephan on February 10, 1885 .
