NGC 2535 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc with active galactic nucleus in the constellation Cancer on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 180 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light-years across. Together with NGC 2536 , it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 82 , Holm 94 or KPG 156 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a large companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 493 , IC 496 , IC 497 , IC 2230 .
The supernova SN 1901A was observed here.
The object was discovered on January 22, 1877 by the French astronomer Édouard Jean-Marie Stephan .
