IC 493 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Cancer on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 275 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 2535 , NGC 2536 , IC 496 , IC 497 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on March 2, 1892 .
