IC 511 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0-a in the constellation Giraffe in the northern sky . It is an estimated 167 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on September 1, 1888 . However, new research has shown that Lewis Swift observed the galaxy NGC 2646 , which fits the description perfectly.
