IC 497 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Cancer on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 183 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 2535 , NGC 2536 , IC 493 , IC 2230 .

The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on March 2, 1892 .
