IC 497 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Cancer on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 183 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 2535 , NGC 2536 , IC 493 , IC 2230 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on March 2, 1892 .
