NGC 2539 is a 6.5 mag bright open star cluster with an angular extent of 22 'in the constellation Puppis . The star cluster is about 650 million years old and contains about 170 stars. The designation stands for the number in the New General Catalog .
The star cluster is about 4400 light years away. In the foreground of NGC 2539 is the star 19 Puppis , which, however, does not belong to the star cluster and is only 185 light years away.
The object was discovered on January 31, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
