NGC 4945 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Centaur in the southern sky . It is an estimated 17 million light rays from the Milky Way and is approximately 140,000 light years across. The galaxy belongs to the so-called Seyfert galaxies , a special type of active galaxies whose centers emit far more energy than quieter galaxies like our Milky Way. A special feature is their very strong H 2 O maser emission.
Together with seven other galaxies, it forms the NGC 5128 group ( LGG 344 ).
The galaxy NGC 4976 is located in the same area of the sky .
On February 8, 2005, the Type IIP supernova SN2005af was discovered here .
The object was discovered by James Dunlop on April 29, 1826 .
