NGC 867 = NGC 875 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a? in the constellation whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 291 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter.
Due to similar radial velocities and about the same distance, NGC 867/875 and its neighbor IC 218 appear to be a gravitationally bound pair.
The object may have been discovered by William Herschel (listed as NGC 867 ) on December 21, 1783 , but was certainly discovered by Heinrich d'Arrest on September 26, 1865 (recorded as NGC 875 ).
