NGC 857 is a lens-shaped galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is an estimated 154 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter. Together with three other galaxies, it forms the IC 1788 group ( LGG 52 ).
The object was discovered by John Herschel on November 18, 1835 .
