NGC 851 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0-a in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 141 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 40,000 ly. Together with IC 211 , it probably forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair.
The object was on 30 November 1885 by the astronomer Edward D. Swift using a 16-inch - telescope discovered.
