NGC 833 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 173 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 835 , NGC 838, and NGC 839 , it forms a group of galaxies that is cataloged as Hickson Compact Group 16 ( Arp 318 ).

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This group of galaxies belongs to the class of galaxies .

The object was discovered by William Herschel on November 28, 1785 .
