NGC 809 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 240 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 85,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 787 and NGC 811 , among others .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2006ef was observed here.
The object was discovered on September 1, 1886 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift .
