NGC 799 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Whale in the southern sky . It is about 266 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 130,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 800, it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair Holm 54 or KPG 52 .

The Type Ia supernova SN2004dt was observed here.

The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on October 9, 1885 using a 16-inch reflector.
