NGC 788 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 183 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years across.
Together with NGC 829 , NGC 830 , NGC 842 and IC 183 , it forms the NGC 788 group .

The Type Ia supernova SN 1998dj was observed here.

The object was discovered by William Herschel on September 10, 1785 .
