NGC 797 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 259 million light years from the Milky Way and about 120,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 801 , it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair.

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 179 .

The object was discovered on September 21, 1786 by the German-British astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel .
