Jack Watling

Jack Watling (born January 13, 1923 in Chingford , United Kingdom, † May 22, 2001 ibid) was a British actor .

Life

childhood and education

Jack Watling was the son of a scrap dealer. As a little boy he wanted to be an actor. He attended the Italia Conti Stage School. He was on stage for the first time at the age of 12.

Career

Watling got his first important role in 1939 as St. George in the musical Where the Rainbow Ends . Watling became famous in 1942 for his portrayal of flight lieutenant Graham in Rattigan's Flare Path . Many other films and television series followed. He also took part in many plays. He made his Broadway debut in 1950. However, he concentrated more on his film career and worked in productions such as Meet Mr Lucifer (1953), The Sea Shall Not Have Them (1954), Reach for the Sky (1956) or The Last Journey of Bismarck (1960). In 1967 and 1968 he was in the British television series Doctor Who in the episodes The Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear as Professor Travers. His daughter Deborah Watling played a companion of the doctor in the series Victoria Waterfield . In 1995 Jack Watling was again in front of the camera next to his daughter Deborah in the film Downtime .

Private life

In 1947 Jack Watling married actress Patricia Hicks . The couple had a son and three daughters, all of whom became actors. In 2001 Watling died. His wife outlived him by ten years. She died of kidney failure in 2011.
