NGC 849 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 245 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 35,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 836 , NGC 837 , NGC 858 , NGC 874 .
The property was discovered by Francis Leavenworth in 1886 .
