NGC 873 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble-type Sc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 179 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 85,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies IC 217 .
The property was developed by William Herschel on November 27, 1785 using a 18.7-inch - telescope discovered.
