IC 217 = IC 1787 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sc with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 84 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 873 .
The type IIb supernova SN 2014cl was observed here.
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 7, 1893 .
