IC 236 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 730 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 130,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 234 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on November 9, 1891 .
