IC 253 is a galaxy in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 326 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 85,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 1065 , NGC 1076 , IC 251 , IC 254 , among others .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 5, 1891 .
