NGC 961 = NGC 1051 = IC 249 is a faint barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBm in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 57 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1022 and IC 243 .
The object was discovered on November 27, 1880 by Édouard Stephan (listed as NGC 1051 ) and in 1886 by Ormond Stone (listed as NGC 961 ).
