IC 234 is a compact galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 274 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 50,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 236 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on November 9, 1891 .
