NGC 944 = IC 228 is a lenticular galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 167 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered by Francis Leavenworth on January 1, 1886 .
