IC 231 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 296 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies IC 225 , IC 232 , IC 237 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 29, 1893 .
