IC 246 is a lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 298 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light-years across.
The galaxies NGC 1009 , NGC 1020 , NGC 1021 , IC 244 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on October 15, 1887 .
