IC 256 is a galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 397 million light years from the Milky Way . The latest research suggests that the galaxy observed is PGC 10729 .

The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on September 6, 1888 .
