The Gischiga ( Russian Гижига, Ги́жига ) is a 221 km long tributary of the Sea of Okhotsk in the Magadan Oblast in the Far East of Russia .

River course

The Gischiga rises in the Kolyma Mountains at an altitude of about 1000  m . It initially flows 20 km to the south and then turns to the east. At river kilometer 139 the Irbytschan meets the river coming from the north. The Gischiga flows in the central reaches to the southeast and gradually turns to the south and finally to the south-southwest. At river kilometer 42 the Chornaya flows into the Gischiga from the left, at river kilometer 34 the Turomtscha from the right. The Gischiga finally flows into the northern end of the Gischigabusen , which extends along the west coast of the Shelikhov Bay . The village ( ceno ) Gischiga is located on the west bank just above the estuary .

Hydrology

The Gischiga drains an area of ​​11,900 km². 20 km above the mouth, the mean discharge is 151.8 m³ / s. The river is usually ice-covered between November and April. The highest monthly discharges usually occur in June with an average of 852 m³ / s.

Wildlife

The river system of the Gischiga uses various salmon fish for spawning , including ketal salmon , pink salmon and silver salmon . Other fish in the river are pike , grayling and Phoxinus , a species of the carp family. Beluga whales occur in the mouth of the Gischiga .
