As Gizhigin Bay ( Russian Гижигинская губа / Gischiginskaja guba ; also Gischigabucht ) of the northwestern part of the great shelikhov gulf referred to the northeastern part of the Sea of Okhotsk in the Far East of Russia forms.
The bay stretches between the mainland, on which the main ridge of the Kolyma Mountains approaches the coast, to the west and the Taigonos peninsula to the east. The peninsula separates the Gischigabusen from the Penschinabusen , which is the northeastern extension of the Schelichow Bay. Along the line that connects Cape Taigonos at the tip of the peninsula of the same name with Cape Wiliginski on the west bank, the bay is about 200 km wide, on the line about the parallel of 60 ° 30 ′ north about 250 km. The length of the Gischiga Bay from this line to the mouth of the eponymous river Gischiga is over 150 km. The inner part of the Gischigabusen from the mouth of the river is 30 to 40 km wide.
The mostly steep and rocky shores of the bay are further divided by capes and smaller bays, especially on the east side. The most conspicuous headlands are Cape Warchalamski, which separates the inner part of the Gischigabusen in the west from a bay called Najachanbusen, and Cape Telanski on the west coast of the Taigonos peninsula. A large number of rivers flow into the bay, including (from west to east) Kananyga, Kalalaga, Wiliga, Propashchaya, Shirokaya, Tawatum, Uikan, Najachan, Bolshaya Garmanda (Great Garmanda), Warchalam, Gischiga, Awekowa, Bolshaya Chaibucha (Great Chaibucha ) and Impowejewem.
The maximum water depth of the Gischigabusen is just under 100 m. The tidal range in the Gischigabusen is considerable: an average of 5 to 6 m, a maximum of 9.6 m. The bay freezes over for more than six months in winter.
Administratively, the sparsely populated coastal area around the Gischigabusen belongs to Magadan Oblast , most of it to Severo-Evensky Rajon , only the westernmost part to Omsuktschan Rajon . Directly or long near the hundreds of kilometers of coastline of Gischigabusens there are only five localities: the Rajonverwaltungszentrum Ewensk at the mouth of the Bolshaya Garmanda in the Well Chan bosom, Gischiga at the mouth of the river (in the 18th to early 20th century "Fortress" and the city of Gischiginsk ), not far from there Tschaibucha and Malaja Tschaibucha on the lower reaches and mouth of the Bolshaya Tschaibucha, as well as Topolowka on the west coast of the Taigonos peninsula.
