Evensk ( Russian Эве́нск ) is an urban-type settlement in the Magadan Oblast ( Russia ) with 1793 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located on the Najachan Bay on the north side of the Gischigabusen of the Okhotsk Sea , at the mouth of the Great Garmanda River (Bolshaya Garmanda). Evensk is about 530 kilometers as the crow flies in a northeastern direction from the Magadan Oblast Administrative Center .
Ewensk is the administrative center of the Rajons Severo-Ewenski .
history
In place of an existing Eweni fishing settlement, the place developed since the 1950s after the village of Najachan, 12 km west at the mouth of the river of the same name, was destroyed by a flood in 1951 and the administration of the Rajon was relocated from there. At the same time, the name was changed from the previous place name Bolshaya Garmanda (after the river) to the current name, which refers to the Ewenen ethnic group who originally lived there. In 1962 the status of urban-type settlement was given.

Economy and Infrastructure
The main industry is fishing. In the area, reindeer herding and hunting are practiced , especially by the indigenous population . Evensk is also a logistical base for the modest gold mining in the Rajon .
There is no fixed road connection to Evensk; the distance to the Magadan Oblast Administrative Center via slopes that can only be used in the frosty season is 1420 km, almost three times the direct distance. Between town and river there is a small airport ( Severo-Evensk , ICAO code UHMW ) with a connection to Magadan. Otherwise the settlement can only be reached by sea.
