Sussuman ( Russian Сусуман , translit. Susuman ) is a small town in the Magadan Oblast ( Russia ) with 5855 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The city is located in the Kolyma region , about 650 km north of the oblast capital Magadan , below the confluence of the Sussuman in the Bjorjoljoch (Bereljoch), a left tributary of the left Kolyma source river Ajan-Jurjach .

The city of Sussuman is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

The name is from the Evenk name kuchuman - snowstorm - derived for the opening out here in the Bjorjoljoch creek.

Sussuman was founded in 1936 as a small settlement that was expanded from 1938 with the start of large-scale gold mining . The city's coat of arms, which shows a stylized gold excavator , also reminds of the origin .

Countless penal camps soon sprung up throughout the area under the gulag system . From 1949 to 1956, the administration of one of the largest Soviet camps, the Saplag ( Sapadny trudowo-isprawitelny lager / Western labor and reform camp of Dalstroi , the main building administration of the Far North ) was located in Sussuman , in which up to 16,600 people were temporarily detained. In 1964 the place received city rights.

With the economic crisis of the 1990s, the population dropped dramatically.

Economy and Infrastructure

Sussuman is one of the centers of gold mining in the Kolyma area. There are also companies in the construction and food industries.

The city is located on the "trunk road of federal importance" Kolyma Jakutsk – Magadan (kilometer 1187 from Jakutsk) and has an airport .
