IC 1551 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc pec in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is about 588 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a maximum extent of about 400,000 light years . This size includes its widely extended spiral arms , the central part of the galaxy is much smaller.
The galaxy appears to have a dual core, meaning that it is the result of galaxy merging, which would explain its elongated arms.
The object was discovered on November 12, 1903 by Stéphane Javelle .
