BahnBonus is a bonus system from Deutsche Bahn for owners of a BahnCard or a (free) BahnBonus card. BahnBonus participants can collect bonus points from Deutsche Bahn and other partners, which can be redeemed for awards. Frequent travelers can achieve a BahnComfort status. The system is operated by Loyalty Partner for the purpose of customer data evaluation and customer loyalty.

3.123 million German citizens collect BahnBonus points (as of June 2012). Every year around 100,000 prizes are given out from a range of around 300 articles (as of 2016).

Points for sales

Every time you buy your own ticket for at least five euros, one bonus and one status point is credited for each euro of rounded up sales. If you have a BahnCard credit card, you will receive 1.5 award points per euro for first class tickets.

Points are usually credited three days after purchasing the ticket, but no earlier than on the day of travel.

Since December 9, 2007, the purchase of tickets for train journeys abroad has also been paid for with BahnBonus points. Since 2010 there has also been a credit for special offers such as Sparpreis or EuropaSpezial.

There is no point credit

  • when purchasing a normal price first class ticket with a BahnCard second class and
  • when purchasing a seat reservation (on day trains; for night trains see below)

Points are credited for the purchase of reservations on certain night trains because they are not reservations according to the tariff, but surcharges for seats, beds or beds.

As part of the Railteam cooperation between several European railways, this program is to be linked in future with the customer loyalty programs of the other companies.

In addition, points can also be collected from certain external partners and from special campaigns.

Since August 2009 it has also been possible to collect points using the turnover made with a BahnCard credit card . The conditions over time:

  • Start 2009: One bonus point for every 3 euros in sales. One bonus point for every EUR 1 DB sales when paying with a BahnCard credit card.
  • From August 1, 2016: One reward point for every 10 euros spent. One bonus point for every EUR 5 DB sales when paying with a BahnCard credit card. The reason for the adjustment is an EU regulation with which the credit card fees for the merchant are limited to max. 0.3 percent (and accordingly less of this can be credited to the customer as a bonus).

Data storage

Deutsche Bahn saves the following data for every ticket purchase that collects BahnBonus points:

  • price
  • Reward Points
  • Status points
  • Departure and destination stations
  • Car class
  • Purchase date
  • Point of sale

With the exception of the point of sale, this data is made available to the customer in a purchase profile.

According to a report by Spiegel online , Deutsche Bahn plans to enable advertising partners to target BahnBonus participants. A transfer of customer data to advertising partners is not intended according to the company.

Rewards for points

Reward points are valid for 36 months. If they are not exchanged for rewards by then, they will expire at the end of the next quarter. An exception are holders of BahnCard credit cards, whose reward points have not expired since mid-2010 during the term of their BahnCard credit card contract.

Reward points can be redeemed for vouchers and rewards from both Deutsche Bahn and external partners. For example, free rides, ticket upgrades, meal vouchers, travel vouchers or magazine subscriptions can be redeemed. To redeem the rewards and to display the points already collected (in November 2011 under “My Bahn” - “My BahnCard and bahn.bonus” - “My Points Overview”) and other BahnCard services, you must first have a PIN sent to you. You can then use this PIN to log into www.bahn.de and have access to the online services within the Meine Bahn area .

Certain free travel awards have been available as online tickets since April 6, 2011, all other rail awards will be sent by post. Some premiums are contingent. There are also occasional promotional bonuses, for example for the European Football Championship in 2008 . Such promotional bonuses are only available for a limited period of time and sometimes only to a limited extent. The award vouchers are generally valid for six months from the date of issue.

As of April 1, 2014, the award catalog for trips was changed. Some free travel options have been reduced from the award points; others such as the free ride for passengers of the type "Freifahrt Flex 2nd class (round trip)" (also for free) have been increased from 2500 points to 3000 points.

history

  • September 1, 2005: Start of the bonus program. Since then, points can be exchanged for rewards.
  • Since September 2006, members of the corporate customer program bahn.corporate have also been able to collect bonus points with the newly introduced “BonusCard Business”.
  • As of December 1, 2006, the range of bonuses was expanded and the lowest bonus level was reduced from 750 to 500 bonus points. The number of awards has been increased to around 40, with new additions including night and car train journeys, travel packages as well as hotel accommodation and rental cars. At the same time, there was no registration requirement. The spectrum of points was also changed up and down.
  • From January 2007 to March 2012, tickets and BahnCards in the first carriage class were awarded 1.5 points for each euro.
  • In December 2007, the range of awards was expanded from 42 to 86 awards. New bonus levels of up to 14,000 points were introduced and it was possible to collect bonus points at ten partner companies and other DB AG subsidiaries such as CityNightLine and DB Rent .
  • On August 1, 2010, a free BahnBonus Card was introduced, with which non-BahnCard holders can collect BahnBonus points. Since then, this card has been used to collect points for tickets that have not been discounted; at the time of the ticket machines, collecting was only possible by entering the start / finish line.
  • At the beginning of 2011, Loyalty Partner announced that it would operate BahnBonus' customer relationship management for a further six years. On April 1, 2011, BahnBonus was repositioned. The previous Deutsche Bahn bonus programs, BahnBonus (premiums) and bahn.comfort (status), were merged under the term BahnBonus. In addition, the frequent traveler status “bahn.comfort” was renamed “bahn.bonus comfort”.
  • On April 1, 2012, the bonus points for 1st class tickets were reduced from 1.5 points / euro to 1 point / euro. If you have a BahnCard credit card, you will continue to receive 1.5 bonus points per euro for 1st class tickets.
  • Since June 10, 2012, it has been possible to purchase BahnBonus points when buying online and in person-operated sales of country tickets , cross-country tickets and happy weekend tickets . In vending machine sales, collecting was only possible via the start-finish selection.
