The Ribnitz-Damgarten West train station is one of the two train stations in the town of Ribnitz-Damgarten in the Ribnitz district in the Vorpommern-Rügen district . In 1889 it was opened in the then still independent town of Ribnitz. Since the merger with Damgarten it has been called "Ribnitz-Damgarten West". Its reception building and other facilities are under monument protection . Two Intercity lines stop at the train station every day, and they run from Stralsund or Binz in the direction of southwest Germany.

location

The Ribnitz-Damgarten West train station is located in the western part of Ribnitz and is there south of the town center. The Ostbahnhof in Damgarten is about three kilometers away, the Gelbensande station about ten kilometers. In Ribnitz, the train station is adjacent to Bahnhofstrasse and Am Wasserturm .

General story

With the opening of the railway line from Rostock to Stralsund on June 1, 1889, the Ribnitz station went into operation. On October 20, 1863, the city decided to surrender land for the construction of the route. Construction of this line began in 1866. In the period around 1899 until 1910 at the latest, it was planned to build an electrically operated railway from Ribnitz to Graal-Müritz . However, due to the high costs, this project was not pursued any further. At that time Ribnitz was also a border station , since the border between Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Prussia ran between Ribnitz and Damgarten . Due to the agreed operational management, locomotives were changed in the Ribnitz train station. These locomotive changes were not necessary until later contracts. This meant that the trains could go through to Rostock. The railway connection had a very positive effect on the economy of the city of Ribnitz.

In 1926 the lines between Rostock and Stralsund were upgraded to become the main line .

In 1950 the independent towns of Ribnitz and Damgarten merged. Thus the Ribnitz train station got the name "Ribnitz-Damgarten West".

Investments

By 1910 the station had two main tracks, both of which had a platform. In the direction of Rostock there was a goods shed next to the station building . There was a loading ramp and a few loading tracks for goods and loading traffic. There was also a locomotive shed. In 1903 this was expanded again.

When the line was upgraded to the main line, new track systems were added. There was also a signal box called "Rot", later called "W2". It existed until 1991. The city of Ribnitz also aimed to enlarge the reception building. The Reich Railway Directorate in Stettin rejected this. There was also no platform roofing at the time. It was only later, after long negotiations, that the building was expanded and a roof was erected.

After the Second World War , some changes were made to the building. The low building on the east side has been replaced by a longer building. This was where the Mitropa restaurant was located, which was closed after the fall of the Wall.

Construction of the fiberboard plant began in the 1950s . The volume of goods in the station increased, as forecast. In 1970 it was 43,000 net tonnes per year. Sidings were built parallel to the main line to Rostock to relieve the station in its shunting activities. Primarily coal and tree trunks were handled. The finished fiberboard was transported to the Ribnitz-Damgarten West train station three times a week. Furthermore, the coal trade in Ribnitz, the agrochemical center in Damgarten and the Ribnitz road maintenance department had a siding for a short time. During this time, the station was only slightly changed. The hub was only expanded further in the mid-1970s. The number of standing tracks was reduced from four to two. Vehicles were parked in the locomotive shed until after 1990.

A few minor changes were made to the station between 1979 and 1982. Baggage acceptance has been enlarged and the tank system has been improved. There were also improvements in the station's supervisory room. For the first time there was a small computer in the ticket sales point and a first ticket machine was installed.

In the mid-1980s, electrification began on the route between Rostock and Stralsund. The work that had already started was no longer completed due to the turnaround. In 1990 only the foundations for the overhead line were set. The level crossing at the eastern end of the station had already been closed. In the course of electrification, the entire station was also converted. The sidings in the direction of Damgarten were extended, so that longer trains could now be parked. The security technology also had to be adapted, for which a new signal box had to be built. This was already done in cooperation with the Federal Railroad . However, DR security technology was still used. In 1987 there were supposed to have been considerations to build a container terminal at the eastern end of the station. Probably with the turning point, this idea was discarded. A connection of Ribnitz-Damgarten to the Rostock S-Bahn has also been discussed in the past.

The only major changes in the 1990s were the renovation of platform 1 and the demolition of the Mitropa extension in the period from 1996 to 1998. The loading track was removed from the goods shed and this area was paved.

The goods traffic in Ribnitz was finally stopped on February 2, 2002, on which the Deutsche Bahn officially closed the goods loading point. Although wood was still being loaded to the end and despite some requests for loading, it was shut down. The plants grew in the following years.

In 2007 there were major modernization measures on the entire route between Rostock and Ribnitz. There were also changes in the city's west train station. Points were renewed and tracks were expanded. The overhead line over the now no longer used loading tracks was dismantled. In 2008 all loading tracks were tied off; the last remaining were removed two years later. Today there are still two sidings and a directional track towards Damgarten. The dome was removed from the water tower in 2010. The dome would have fallen down almost uncontrollably. But such an accident could be prevented.

In the summer of 2011, weeks of heavy rain fell in the area. On July 30th, a severe landslide happened, in which the embankment immediately at the western entry point was particularly damaged. This meant that platform 2 and the sidings were temporarily closed. During this time all traffic was diverted to platform 1. This met with sharp criticism as it was still raining heavily and there were fears that more landslides could occur. The line in this section was repaired by the end of August. All train crossings now had to take place in Gelbensande and Ribnitz-Damgarten Ost , which led to long delays.

In June 2012, passenger information systems were installed in the station . Furthermore, the platform lighting and clocks were renewed. The city of Ribnitz-Damgarten decided to take a number of measures to increase the attractiveness of the Westbahnhof, some of which have already been started. More P + R parking spaces are to be created and a better connection to the cycle path network is planned. A bridge between the station forecourt, platform 2 and the southern part of Ribnitzes has been planned for several years.

For several years now, Deutsche Bahn has wanted to sell the station building.

For the timetable change in December 2018, the house platform was provisionally increased to 55 centimeters, as the IC was replaced by ICE. New platforms and an underpass are to be built by December 2022.

Signal boxes and security technology

In the early 1990s, a new, relatively large signal box was built in Ribnitz. The signal box for the dispatcher is on the third floor . There are also other rooms there, but not all of them are used today. The track diagram interlocking is one of the type DR GS II. Two Hl signals are on the station. Until the turn of the year 2011/12, a level crossing was still controlled from the signal box; another until December 2012. Both are now controlled by automatic systems. The level crossing between the two platforms is now secured by local staff. Before that, simple chains were used for this. In 2009 they were replaced by a massive gate. This gate must be closed at every train crossing and the dispatcher must be given permission. Since July 2014, service personnel and dispatchers have only been communicating via telephone and not through an intercom.
