Railway stations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

The Ribnitz-Damgarten Ost Station is one of two railway stations of the city Ribnitz-Damgarten in the Vorpommern-Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . It is located in the eastern part of Damgarten on the Stralsund – Rostock railway line and was opened in 1886. In 1895 the Franzburger Kreisbahnen route was added. It ended in Damgarten. Operation on this route was discontinued in 1965. With the merger of the cities of Ribnitz and Damgarten in 1950, the company was renamed and has been called "Ribnitz-Damgarten Ost" ever since. Towards the end of the 1990s there was extensive modernization work on the line and the station.

location

The Ribnitz-Damgarten Ost train station is located in the Damgarten district on Richtenberger Straße , about one kilometer southeast of the town center. The Ribnitz-Damgarten West train station is about four kilometers to the west in the Ribnitz district. To the east, the next station is Altenwillershagen train station, about six kilometers away .

history

In 1886 the Damgarten station on the route between Rostock and Stralsund went into operation. A narrow-gauge station was added to the already existing standard-gauge station for the Franzburger Kreisbahnen line to Barth , which was opened on May 4, 1895. For the city, the small train was of particular use, as the port in Damgarten was opened to traffic and goods could be transported to the state train station. There was always a lot of loading. For the transport of goods, direct trains ran between the port and the state train station.

The small train had its facilities immediately north of the state train station. It had a separate station building and a locomotive shed . There was also a roll-up ramp, which ensured that standard-gauge freight cars could be jacked up onto the small railroad cars. In addition, goods traffic took place on a regular-gauge connecting route to the Pütnitz airfield , which was built by the National Socialists in the early 1940s to deploy parts of the air force there. After the Second World War , the siding continued to be used and served to supply Soviet troops.

In 1950 the cities of Ribnitz and Damgarten merged. The Damgartener Bahnhof has since been called "Ribnitz-Damgarten Ost".

In 1961, the Rostock District Council planned to extensively expand Damgarten station. This should affect both freight and passenger traffic, because the station was much more important in GDR times than it is today. The station building was to be expanded and an extension for the Mitropa was added. An expansion of the track system and the establishment of a transfer group in the direction of Stralsund was planned, from which the main line to Pütnitz should branch off. But there were no major renovations. On May 29, 1965, the small railway was shut down and its tracks removed. The space gained was used to expand the standard gauge systems. This created a siding to the Damgarten agrochemical center . In addition, a leather goods factory was supplied that did not have its own connection.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , freight traffic fell sharply, and in 1992 there should hardly have been any. Only a few handover trips took place. After that, old wagons were parked on the loading tracks. In the early 1990s, the line and the station were electrified. The tracks and signaling technology were renewed. The shape signals were converted to HI signals . The station also received new station signs in the 1990s. Curiously, in January 1998, six months before a major renovation, the points were equipped with point heating . These were in operation for just two months and were dismantled again in autumn.

The route between Ribnitz-Damgarten West and Stralsund was rehabilitated as part of the German Unity No. 1 traffic project. Work on this began on May 18, 1998. On September 27, the route was completely closed. The dismantling of all systems started one day later, as evidenced by a photo from Velgast . Probably a day later, signals and catenary in the station were dismantled. To secure train journeys for the construction trains, a few railway workers were still on site. After the rails had been completely dismantled, the signal box was unoccupied. The rooms were used again between June and September. In Damgarten, a provisional block with Hl signals was set up because the signal box in Velgast had not yet been completed, the overhead line was without electricity and the technology at the level crossing was not yet working. The staff had to secure the level crossing with traffic lights and a flutter tape . In December 1999, when the signal box in Velgast started operating, this was over.

The vacant entrance building was auctioned on September 25, 2015 for 16,000 euros with its property and has been renovated since September 2016.

Platforms and tracks

Before the major renovation in 1998, the station had a through track and a siding. In addition, there were several loading tracks and two connecting tracks to the Pütnitz airfield and the Damgarten agrochemical center. All exit tracks were equipped with protective switches and tracks. There was a side platform and a central platform for passenger traffic , which were connected by an overpass.

Since the renovation there has been a through track and a siding. Freight and sidings were almost completely removed. A buffer stop near the reception building is still available. The siding to Pütnitz that still exists is tied off from the route network. The track ends today in an earth wall in front of the former station entrance.

Today the station has two side platforms that can be reached via the level crossing west of the station. They are 203 and 205 meters long and 55 centimeters high.

Reception building

Until the mid-1990s, the building had a room for the dispatcher , a ticket office and a small waiting room. A train station restaurant was also once housed here. On the upper floor there were still two apartments that were still inhabited until the beginning of the 1990s.

Security technology

A Jüdel- type mechanical signal box originally ensured train operations. It was only a question of form signals. The course was set mechanically. The command signal box B2 was housed in an extension of the reception building and the switchman signal box W1 at the eastern exit of the station in the direction of Stralsund. The level crossing was secured by a gatekeeper. This guard building has been uninhabited since 2010.

In 1990 it was switched to HI signals. The switches were initially operated mechanically. The level crossing was equipped with a full electric barrier that was operated from the signal box. The functions of the command and switchman interlocking were merged. Since the switches were now controlled by the command signal box, the switch keeper signal box became superfluous and demolished.

Since the major renovation in 1999, the signals and points have been operated by the dispatcher at Velgast station. This means that there are no longer any local staff at the station in Ribnitz-Damgarten Ost. A small building was built next to the reception building for the technology of the new signals. It has an emergency operator station for local operation of the station.
