Saßnitz depot

A railway depot was attached to the Saßnitz station to handle the steam locomotives . This had a seven-sided rectangular shed , several coal bunkers , a water crane and a turntable . From there, tank locomotives of the BR 62 and BR 78 were used. In the 1950s the depot received a 23-meter turntable. From this point on, locomotives with tenders could travel to Saßnitz and be rotated there.

traffic

Sassnitz station was always served by all long-distance trains on the royal line between Germany and Sweden . 1914 wrong about the track two express train pairs between Berlin and Sweden. In the summer season, more express and inland trains served the station. This long-distance train service remained largely constant for decades, with the exception of wartime. The two pairs of express trains also carried through cars to or from Hamburg .

After the construction of the Rügen dam in 1936, the offer remained largely unchanged. The Rügen dam and the Saßnitz ferry port were severely damaged in the Second World War and could no longer be used in 1945. The ferry traffic and thus the long-distance trains were initially shifted to the route from Trelleborg to Gdynia and later to Świnoujście-Odra Port . It was not until 1948 that traffic was moved back to the route to Saßnitz. From 1954 to 1959 the Balt-Orient-Express ran via Saßnitz.

In the summer of 1955 that led German Reichsbahn the " Saßnitz Express " between Sassnitz and Munich one with access to the ferry, which they part of the currency pregnant , about Großenbrode Kai current leisure traffic between the western Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin and Scandinavia for themselves wanted to win. The pair of trains was served by pre-war express railcars and, apart from in Saßnitz, only stopped in West Berlin and in West German territory to switch passengers. From 1958 the "Saßnitz-Express" was converted to a train hauled by a locomotive. In the following years, the train routes over the Königslinie were changed several times.

In 1981/1982 four pairs of express trains served the Saßnitz station, one of which was only for internal traffic within the GDR . Until 1983 there were through coaches from or to Munich, after that the Swedish trains only ran to or from West Berlin.

After the reunification in the GDR , the market share of long-distance rail traffic fell, and the number of trains on the Königslinie was gradually reduced. With the closure of the old Sassnitz ferry port and the relocation to the new Sassnitz ferry port , the former Mukran ferry port, Sassnitz station lost its remaining long-distance traffic in 1998.

Since 1998 the station has been served exclusively by regional traffic. The RE 9, known as the “ Hanse Express ”, reaches the station every hour from Stralsund Monday to Friday , and trains come from Rostock every two hours every day .
