Sassnitz

Hanse-Express is the brand name of a series of regional express trains operated by Deutsche Bahn that connect Sassnitz , Binz and Bergen on Rügen with Rostock , Schwerin , Büchen and Hamburg . The hubs are Lietzow and Rostock , where passengers have to change trains.

The Hamburg – Rostock connection has existed since December 2002 as a result of the shortening of the regional express service between Kiel , Lübeck and Rostock, as well as the extension of the regional express line Hamburg – Schwerin via Bad Kleinen to Rostock. However, the Hanse Express was only introduced in 2007, with five instead of four cars being used for the first time.

Train run

As the regional express RE 1 from Hamburg main station , the train first travels on the Berlin-Hamburg railway and in Hagenow Land on the Hagenow Land – Schwerin railway line . From Schwerin , the Ludwigslust – Wismar railway line is used, and then in Bad Kleinen it changes to the Bad Kleinen – Rostock railway line .

In Rostock, connecting travelers can board the second Hanse Express RE 9 , which runs on the Rostock – Stralsund and Stralsund – Sassnitz routes to Bergen. From Bergen there is a continuous connection to Sassnitz all year round, Monday to Friday and seasonally daily. A separate train runs according to the same scheme from Bergen on the Lietzow – Binz railway line to the Baltic resort of Binz .

Since the 2019/2020 timetable change , the repeater trains previously operated by DB Regio Schleswig-Holstein between Hamburg Hbf and Büchen have also been part of the services of the Hanse Express. In the course of this handover, the Friedrichsruh stop , which was previously only served on Sundays, was no longer served by passenger trains from December 8, 2020, as the wagons of the Hanse Express are too long for the existing platforms . Before that, railcars of the 648 series ran between Hamburg Hbf and Büchen on Sundays and public holidays .

Vehicle material

RE 1 Hamburg – Rostock

On the RE 1 Hamburg – Rostock, the DB Regio Nordost uses 5-car sets, which are usually formed from Dosto07 from the manufacturer Bombardier . From time to time, older double-decker cars are also used, such as B. the Dosto03 of the RE 5 Rostock – Berlin.

The cars have a low entry and high entry (two flights of stairs). The control car is usually at the northern end of the train. Furthermore, there is a mixed-class car with a range of restaurants in the form of a snack machine and a car with bicycle parking spaces. The class 112 , the class 120.2 or the class 182 are used as the locomotive . The locomotive and wagons are located in the Rostock depot .

RE 9 Rostock - Stralsund - Sassnitz / Binz

Five class 429 railcars were used on the RE 9 . Talent 2 was also used as a substitute. Since the 2019/2020 timetable change, the Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn (ODEG) has been using vehicles on loan from the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).

criticism

The magazine “Der Fahrgast” of the passenger association Pro Bahn reported at the turn of the year 2010/2011 on criticism of overcrowded trains on the Hamburg – Rostock route. In addition, there were already problems with the connection between the Hanse Express and the Regional Express Kiel - Lüneburg (RE83) at Büchen station in 2008 .

At the 2012 timetable change, the two evening train connections between Schwerin and Aumühle near Hamburg, where there was a connection to the Hamburg S-Bahn until then, were canceled . The last possibility of a direct train journey at the regional tariff between Schwerin and Hamburg was thus restricted to around 8 p.m. Pro Bahn criticized this step and called for the resumption of the two affected train connections.
