The station Altefähr is the station of the community Altefähr on Rügen . From Stralsund it is the first stop on Rügen. Until 1967 a route of the Rügen small railway to Putbus began here .

location

The train station is about a kilometer southeast of the center of Altefähr. The Strelasund is about 200 meters away. The nearest train station on the mainland is Stralsund Rügen dam, about three kilometers away, on the island, six kilometers away, the Rambin stop . The Bundesstraße 96 and the Landstraße 29 border the operating site .

history

The original ferry station , which at that time was still called Altefähre , was located northeast of today's station. On July 1, 1883, the station went into operation with the opening of the railway line to Sassnitz . There were initially two ferry basins and loading facilities for passenger and freight traffic . In total, the operations center had three tracks, a platform , a reception building and another building. There was also a locomotive shed with a turntable .

In 1896 the narrow-gauge station was opened, which was located to the east of the standard-gauge station. The crossing over the Strelasund took about 40 minutes by ship. To improve the connection, the plan arose to replace the ferry line with a railway embankment. The Stettin Reichsbahndirektion moved the standard gauge station with the construction of the Rügen dam. The new station is four meters higher than its surroundings because of the height of the Rügen dam. In order to be able to reach the platforms, stairs were built. On October 5, 1936, traffic over the dam began. The narrow-gauge station also had to be rebuilt further east and a little higher, as the dam partially ran over the previous station area.

The station became particularly important after the Ziegelgraben Bridge and the dam were blown up on 1/3. May 1945 to. All goods and people had to be hauled over the old ferry docks again. The narrow-gauge railway was also given a temporary track along the road to the old ferry pier. After a temporary bridge had been installed, rail traffic ran over the dam again from October 15, 1947.

During the GDR era, Altefähr was a cargo handling point for wood. The station became more important as a receiving station at the end of the single-track stretch of the Strelasund crossing . On September 23, 1967, the narrow-gauge line to Putbus was shut down. Then it was dismantled - apart from the entrance building of the narrow-gauge station. In 1989 the line to Sassnitz was electrified.

After the fall of the Wall, there were initially no major renovations. But the ferry traffic in Sassnitz and Mukran decreased significantly. For this reason, freight and sidings were no longer necessary in Altefähr, so that tracks 3, 4 and 5 were closed and partially removed around 2005.

Platforms and tracks

Reception building with access to the standard gauge platform

In the standard-gauge railway station, a central platform was built between tracks 1 and 2 . There was also another outer platform that was later dismantled. New freight and loading tracks were also created. The narrow-gauge station opposite also had several tracks. But it only had one platform track. There was also a separate station building and a locomotive shed there.

Reception building

The station building is between the tracks. Here there was a signal box and the service chief's rooms.

Old station building

The old station building was west of today's station on Strelasund. After the Rügen dam was built, the building was used for various purposes. In April / May 2014 it was demolished, although consideration was given to adding it to the list of monuments. The lower monument protection authority of the district then tried to prosecute the owner.

Security technology

Before the electronic signal box (ESTW) went into operation, there were two signal boxes in Altefähr. The signal box for the dispatcher was housed in the reception building, the switch signal box at the exit towards Samtens . In 2007, the security technology was dismantled and the line has had an ESTW since then.

Narrow-gauge station

After the construction of the Rügen dam, the new narrow-gauge station was built to the southeast of the standard gauge systems. The loading tracks were in the north-east of the station. There was also a track to the loading route of the standard gauge station. After the operation was discontinued, the track systems were removed. The small station building of the narrow-gauge railway (Am Bahnhof 10), built in 1936, was retained, but is just as empty as the two-track locomotive shed (Am Bahnhof 14), also built in 1936. Both buildings and a former civil servants' residence (Am Bahnhof 5) are listed as historical monuments .

Connection

Altefähr is served hourly by the Regional Express line RE 9, which runs from Stralsund to Sassnitz or Binz . Their journeys start in Rostock every 120 minutes .
