Darius Jamar Covington (born August 5, 1991 in Virginia Beach , Virginia ) is an American basketball player . Covington is usually only called DJ Covington for short . After studying in his home country, Covington turned pro in 2014 and played in his first season in Belgium , briefly in the Philippines and Greece . In the 2015/16 basketball Bundesliga he played for the German first division club Phoenix Hagen. On March 6, 2016, Covington sustained a serious and high-profile knee injury in a Bundesliga match, which calls into question the continuation of his professional career.

Career

Covington remained after high school at Norfolk Academy in his native state of Virginia and moved to study at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington (Virginia) , where he in 2010 at four years for the college team Keydets then still in the Big South Conference of NCAA played . After being named "Freshman of the Year" by the Big South in the first year, Covington's game shares decreased in its second season after back problems. A year later, as well as in his final season as "Senior", he was named " Defensive Player of the Year" of the Big South and, as Senior 2014, was also one of the five best players in the "Conference All First Team". Within the keydets, Covington led the “all-time” rankings in “field goal percentage” ( German  success rate for throwing attempts in an ongoing game situation ) and the total number of shot blocks at the end of his studies. In 2012 the Keydets lost the final of the "Big South Tournament" against the Bulldogs of the University of North Carolina at Asheville . In Covington's senior year 2014, it was enough to be invited to the nationwide CIT postseason tournament, in which the Keydets were only eliminated in the semifinals after a 62:75 defeat against the Bulldogs of Yale University . Previously, the Keydets, who were notorious for their "uptempo play" and led the NCAA in points per game, had always scored over 90 points per game in three rounds of this national tournament.

The Big South Conference in general is considered too weak to sustainably attract the attention of clubs in the highest endowed professional league NBA , and so Covington turned professional after graduating in 2014, but began his career in Europe. He signed a contract with Basic-Fit Excelsior in Brussels , where he only had eight assignments until December 2014 before the contract was canceled. In mid-January 2015 he moved to the Philippine Basketball Association for the Alaska Aces for four weeks . After this contract was terminated again, he played from the end of February 2015 until the end of the season for the Greek first division club from Kifisia , who missed another play-off participation in eleventh place in the final table. For 2015-16 Basketball Bundesliga Covington went to Germany and signed a contract with Phoenix from Hagen , who prefer a similarly fast and aggressive style of play as his former college team. After the first half of the season, the Hageners were in a midfield position with manageable chances of a play-off placement when Covington seriously injured his knee in the home game against German champions Brose Baskets on March 6, 2016. While walking back, Covington stumbled and unhappily dislocated his lower leg completely. The complete dislocation of the knee was described as an unusual sports injury that can otherwise occur in traffic accidents, and as a horror injury that caused circulatory problems and fainting spells in the audience. Covington then had to undergo extensive surgical treatment and then end his career. In the meantime, as a coach, he looks after the second representative of Schalke 04 in basketball and wants to stay professionally connected to basketball.
