The Second Party Conference of the SED decided in 1952, among other things, to build up "national armed forces" and thus to build up our own capacities for the repair of military technology of the barracked People's Police . To implement this, the Ministry of the Interior under Willi Stoph decided on November 29, 1952 an investment plan for the major project, which was initially called the Mecklenburg Industrial Office (MIB). The partially preserved site of the Neubrandenburg torpedo testing facility (TVA) with its suitable workshops was selected as the location . On the 25 hectare site, there were two workshop buildings (7000 m²), a bunker, two building ruins (3500 m²), some smaller ancillary buildings and cleared foundations. The site had a rail connection.

On April 25, 1953, the existing plants were handed over by the Soviet authorities to those of the GDR. In the summer of 1953 work began with the task of carrying out all repairs on tracked vehicles of the military of the GDR , from 1956 the NVA , and training the necessary specialists. It initially concerned the T-34 type of tank , which was initially regenerated in Hall 1. After the construction of Hall 2, the transition to assembly line repairs in the local assembly line began in 1954 , as well as the expansion of repairs to other weapons technology such as armored personnel carriers (SPW) and special trucks such as workshop maintenance vehicles. In Hall 2, after the T-34, the T-55s were dismantled, repaired and assembled in all variants at regular intervals. In the surrounding halls, the individual assemblies were repaired and spare parts were manufactured, which were then delivered back to the production line. Hall 12 was built in 1960, where the clock line for the buoyant BMP armored personnel carriers and later the PT-76 floating armored vehicles was located . Vocational training was established on the upper floor. At the end of the 1970s, a fundamental modernization of the repair was necessary because new technologies were required for the processing of the T-72 tanks . On December 3, 1979, the largest hall of the RWN, Hall 20 in the north area, in which the new tank line was planned, was handed over. Other peripheral buildings for supplies were also built, e.g. B. electroplating , NC turning shop , etc. To the east of hall 20, further buildings were built in which the workshop maintenance trolleys were set up and equipped based on the W50 . These vehicles were delivered to both warring parties in desert camouflage during the Iraq-Iran war.

In 1989, the RWN repaired and delivered 50 T-55 tanks for Iran (which they captured from the Iraqis during the war), with one vehicle being delivered as a modernized T-55AM variant.

At the end of 1953 the number of employees was 707. It increased to 2,278 people by 1978. On January 1, 1956, the RWN became the state-owned company " VEB Repairwerk Neubrandenburg" (RWN). Due to orders from other Warsaw Pact states , expansions were necessary and so the plant grew into what is probably the largest of its kind in Europe. A tank test route was laid out along the Tollensesees in Nemerower Holz , which was designated as a restricted area.

In the 1980s, the company, together with parts of the company, employed up to 5,000 people, including around 1,200 young people, making it the largest employer in the region.

Operating parts

On January 1, 1966, the RWN took over at the decision of Ministers of the GDR the VEB agricultural machinery Gützkow and VEB apparatus and Maschinenfabrik Teterow . In Teterow , mainly the armored wheeled vehicles (SPW) were repaired, the operating part had around 800 employees. In Gützkow mainly the drive assemblies for the tanks were repaired and delivered to the assembly line or as spare parts to the NVA. In the 1970s, the focus there was on converting imported vehicles (e.g. Urals and GAS ) for the needs of the NVA. In the 1980s, the new production of the tensioning mechanisms for the tank works of the USSR and as spare parts for the entire Warsaw contract became the export hit with an annual volume of around 50 million M. Gützkow had around 400 employees. From 1972 to 1990 the operating part used Schloss Wieck as an apprentice residence and a cultural center.

Holiday camp

The RWN was responsible for the central pioneer camp " Raymonde Dien " in the Neubrandenburg district in Trassenheide on Usedom . It was located directly behind the dunes in the forest and consisted of barracks, tents and permanent sanitary buildings. In addition to the Prerower camp, it was one of the largest central holiday camps on the Baltic coast. After the fall of the Wall, the camp was leveled and the large spa clinic was built on the site.

1990 until today

After 1990 the then independent city acquired a large part of the land, the lake and the former restricted area. As a result of the two plus four contract and the reunification , the main client of the RWN ceased to exist. However, there were still enough disarmament and scrapping orders, including all armored personnel carriers of the factory combat groups and 1000 T-55 tanks. The successors of the RWN were the Neubrandenburger Maschinenbau GmbH (NEUMAB) and the Fahrzeugwerke Neubrandenburg (at that time a subsidiary of the Diehl Group ). The operating parts were spun off and privatized independently. In December 2001 the plant in Neubrandenburg had to close due to a lack of orders. In 2003 the former, 2.6 km long works railway was dismantled to the Neubrandenburg train station .

Today there are various medium-sized companies, a marina and restaurants in the area. It is to be developed into a mixed residential, commercial, artist and trendy district . The Augusta lido was expanded and expanded and the restricted area following there was lifted, cleared and the Tollensesee cycle path was able to be built.
