Diehl Defense is a subgroup and division of Diehl based in Überlingen on Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg . It includes all defense technology business units of the parent company. The largest subsidiary is Diehl Defense GmbH & Co. KG, but since companies are often founded for individual projects, especially in the armaments sector, there are also many joint ventures with other armaments companies as corporate units.
Diehl Defense GmbH & Co. KG
history
The company was founded on September 17, 2004 through the merger of the companies Diehl Munitionssysteme GmbH & Co. KG (DMS) and Bodenseewerk Geräteechnik GmbH (BGT). While DMS was already a 100% subsidiary of Diehl Stiftung & Co. KG , the French company Aerospatiale-Matra, as a minority shareholder, owned 20% of the BGT shares that had been acquired by the Diehl Group in 1989. BGT emerged from the aviation activities in the former Lake Constance plant . Diehl ammunition systems have their origins before the Second World War, when Diehl's metalworks were classified as an important war operation and began to produce fuses and cartridges. From 1960, Bodensee Geräteechnik was the general contractor for the European production program of the Sidewinder AIM-9B air-to-air missile . A homing head was developed from this experience. Diehl Defense is therefore the general contractor and project coordinator for the air-to-air missile program IRIS-T . Since 2008 Diehl BGT Defense GmbH & Co. KG has been the main component of the newly created Diehl Defense subgroup. Diehl Defense is the German cooperation partner of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems for the production and marketing of the Predator B on the German market. The defense business of the Diehl Foundation has been brought together under the umbrella of Diehl Defense GmbH & Co. KG since February 1, 2017.
