Impala Platinum Holdings ( Implats ) is a South African mining company based in Illovo , Gauteng .

Implats primarily produces platinum and palladium , but also rhodium and nickel .

Corporate activities

Implats operates the mining, refining and distribution of metals, especially platinum, in South Africa (four mines) and Zimbabwe (two mines). The main mines are in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa and Great Dyke in Zimbabwe. In total, the company has reserves of 212 million ounces of platinum and produced around 2.4 million ounces in 2014, including 1.178 million ounces of platinum. Impala is involved in exploration projects in Botswana , Mozambique , Madagascar and Canada .

Implats shares are listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. In the S&P Africa 40 Index , which was created in 2008 , Implats is the company with the third highest weighting.

Implats is criticized by the South African trade unions for poorly paying the workforce and for disregarding health and safety regulations.
