Ogies is a village in the South African province of Mpumalanga . It is located in the municipality of Emalahleni in the district of Nkangala .
geography
In 2011, Ogies had 1,230 residents. To the north of Ogies lies the township of Phola, which had 31,885 inhabitants in the same year. Ogies is located around 30 kilometers southwest of the city of eMalahleni .
history
Ogies was built in 1928 on the site of the Oogiesfontein farm. The name means something like "eye source" (ie source with many secondary sources).
The state-owned African Exploration Mining and Finance Corporation (AEMFC), which was reactivated in 2007, built its first coal mine near Ogies. It was inaugurated in 2011 and supplies its coal primarily to the Kendal power plant located a few kilometers to the southwest.
Economy and Transport
Ogies is located in a mining area of hard coal , which is extracted in open-cast mining .
Ogies Station is a major marshalling yard on the Richards Bay Coal Line . A network of railway lines branches off from Ogies to the southeast, leading to various coal mines.
The N12 trunk road runs north of Ogies in an east-west direction. The R545, which leads south-east to Bethal , and the R555, which is roughly parallel to the N12, cross in Ogies.
